Daniel Kirk's Songs for Kids

I just heard from an author/illustrator friend tonight--Daniel Kirk, whose books I love. (I met Daniel at a conference a couple years back--we were sitting at the same lunch table--and was I excited when he told me who he was. I've been a fan for years.) You may know his books, including Library Mouse and Tugga Tugga Tugboat. He's also written and illustrated three wonderful collections of poems (Go, Dogs Rule, and Cat Power)… Continue

The Antiques

What about the longtime classics that students study in middle and high school? These are worthy, weighty books that form the backbone of our knowledge of literature. The language is often complex and even archaic, and the plot may seem convoluted for today’s more linear readers. Students are known to groan when they are assigned to read them, but they are often surprised at how rich and memorable the books are. True, some classics will not thrill them. (Swiss Family Robinson comes to miContinue

Great Classic Illustrated Books

What constitutes a classic picture book? It’s a book you’ve read a zillion times and never gotten tired of sharing with the children in your life. Many have memorable lines, quotes that have become mantras and a part of your family’s personal lingo. (See the quiz

Snow Day

It's snowing. They're saying we could have a foot or more here in the middle of now-scenic New Jersey, and already the lawns are white. I just got home today from an exhausting but exciting week on the road, doing children's literature workshops for teachers and librarians in PA, NY, and NC. I'm bushed, but grateful to make it back before the weather descended. I meet so many memorable people at my seminars. They're in the trenches, doing the hard jobs--teaching kids to read and love books--and… Continue

Almost Can't-Miss Sure Shot Books...for Girls

26 BOOKS GIRLS CAN’T RESIST

Boys like talking rats and mice; girls like talking dogs and cats. Boys like rampaging monsters that tear down cities and are defeated by a hero; girls like rampaging alpha girls who tear down the less popular girls and are given their comeuppance by the nice girl who has finally had enough.

Do the statements above fit your kids? Of course not; they’re generalities, and it’s always satisfying to watch kids defy… Continue

ALA YOUTH MEDIA AWARDS, 1/26/09

Good morning, America! Are you up yet? Today's the big day. I wait for this day every year, when they announce the winners of the year's biggest children's book awards: the Newbery (for a book's text; ages 8-14; note the single R in Newbery), Caldecott (for illustrations), Printz (for young adult literature, ages 12 and up), Sibert (for informational--nonfiction--books), Geisel (named after Theodor Seuss Geisel--you know him, right?--for easy readers), CoretContinue

Books About the Holidays

These 54 books are riveting titles you might want to buy or borrow (you can’t afford every book you want, which is why they invented libraries, thank goodness) for the holiday season and pull out each year right after Thanksgiving to share aloud, and reminisce over, and get ready for the celebrations to come. Just as Christmas cookies or Hanukkah latkes are traditions in many families, so too should great books be a part of the holiday fun.

Almost Can’t-Miss Sure Shot Books…for Boys

Are boys and girls different in their reading tastes and habits? In many ways, they are. While there are plenty of children’s books out there that appeal to everyone, I’ve made a list of the things boys like best, and matched it with 25 irresistible books that have true boy appeal. The list is arranged loosely and progressively by age, from birth to teen. While you’re reading it, be thinking about what other things your boys like best, and what books have satisfied them most. We’ll follow up in… Continue
